A tragic incident has shocked the community of Puerto de la Cruz in Tenerife, where a 53-year-old Czech tourist lost his life when he was swept away by waves while taking photographs in a natural pool area. The incident occurred at 16:15 last Wednesday and was immediately reported to the Emergency Coordination Centre 112 of the Canary Islands Government.
In view of the emergency, the Emergency and Rescue Group of the archipelago deployed a helicopter to rescue the man, who was already suffering from cardiorespiratory arrest when he was recovered from the water. Difficult sea conditions complicated the operation, as shown in a video released by 112 on the social platform X, where the helicopter can be seen struggling against the swell to rescue the tourist.
Despite continuous efforts to revive him, first in the helicopter and then on land by medical staff in La Guancha, the tourist sadly passed away. His death has highlighted the dangers of approaching the sea during adverse weather conditions, especially when the authorities had warned about the strong waves and winds that are currently battering the Canary Islands. These conditions have led the Directorate General for Security and Emergencies to declare a coastal flood risk alert, which could affect promenades and roads close to the coast at high tide.
