Airports in the Canary Islands archipelago recorded a 4% increase in passenger numbers in April 2024, reaching 4.2 million passengers, reflecting the growing interest in this popular tourist destination. According to the latest figures from airport operator Aena, the largest increase in passengers was recorded in Gran Canaria, up 3% compared to April of the previous year.
In the first four months of this year, Canary Islands airports welcomed 17.86 million travelers, a 10% increase on the same period last year. Commercial flights account for the vast majority of passengers. International routes are also performing well, with 1.71 million passengers on domestic flights.
Gran Canaria maintains its leading position in terms of passenger numbers among the islands of the archipelago. It is followed by Tenerife South Airport, which showed an increase of 7.4%. Cesar Manrique-Lanzarote and Tenerife North airports also saw an increase in passenger traffic. While La Gomera Airport recorded a 6% decrease in passenger numbers, with a total of 9,426 passengers.
In addition to passenger traffic, Canary Islands airports handled 38,109 flights in April 2024, a 6.9% increase on last April. 2,994 tons of cargo were also transported, up 19% year-on-year and highlighting the growing role of the archipelago’s airports in the region’s logistics and transport operations.
