The authorities of Santa Cruz de Tenerife have announced the start of a €189,000 project to improve traffic and parking management on the popular Las Teresitas beach. The project, in collaboration with Kapsch TrafficCom, started in November 2024 and is scheduled for completion in May 2025.
The main components of the project are:
- Installation of surveillance cameras: Five cameras will monitor vehicles entering and exiting the car park, providing an accurate real-time count of available spaces.
- Sensors for special parking spaces: Seventy-five sensors will monitor 120 parking spaces designed for people with disabilities, ensuring they are accessible and used correctly.
- Information panels: Three dynamic panels will be placed along the 7-kilometre coastal road leading to the beach, including Avenida Marítima, Avenida de Anaga and the San Andrés motorway. These panels will provide drivers with up-to-date information on the availability of parking spaces, allowing them to make informed decisions before arriving at the beach.
According to the city’s mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, the project aims to improve the experience of visiting the beach for both locals and tourists, reducing congestion and optimising the use of parking zones. Mobility consultant, Evelyn Alonso, said that Las Teresitas Beach often faces traffic problems during peak hours and on days with good weather, and the implementation of this technology will significantly help to solve them.

The director of Kapsch TrafficCom in Spain and Portugal, Javier Aguirre, emphasised the importance of ensuring access to the beaches and preserving them for future generations, noting that this project will not only improve mobility at Las Teresitas, but will also increase comfort for all visitors.
In addition, city officials are developing a protocol to activate the bus lane on days with higher temperatures, especially when heat warnings from the Canary Islands government are in effect.
